the new wineskin of our hearts
“and no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled, and the skins will be destroyed. But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins.” this parable is repeated in matt 9:17, mark 2:22, and luke 5:37-38
Jesus is the source of new wine. because of his overwhelming love for us, he paid a ransom for our sins with his own blood; so that we can have this new wine (the grace of God, being filled with the holy spirit, a renewed love, & so much more), all of which is so freely given to us even when we don’t deserve it.
but we cannot receive this new wine if the wineskin of our hearts is old. “and no one puts new wine into old wineskins. If he does, the wine will burst the skins—and the wine is destroyed, and so are the skins.” how often do we try to try to maintain our old worldly ways and just attach Jesus onto it? for me, it’s quite often. well, Jesus didn’t come down to earth to just patch up our old lives, but he came down to freely give us NEW lives, a new life in HIM & give our hearts a new wineskin. in ezekiel 11:19, God says, “and i will give them one heart, and a new spirit i will put within them. i will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh.”
as we realize our desperate need for our lives to be transformed by Christ, we can start to reject our old wineskin that has conformed to this world, & we can worship God through our obedience, offer up our lives as a pleasing sacrifice to Him, and ask God to transform us and give us the new wineskin of our hearts. “therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!" 2 corninthians 5:17
